• The Deats: Delmon Young’s Confused Racial Discrimination

  

  Detroit Tigers outfielder Delmon Young was arrested Friday for attacking a man outside his Midtown Hilton Hotel. Now this all started with a drunk Young witnessing a group of Chicago tourists giving a Jewish homeless man their money. According to police documents, this incited the ball player, who responded with, “You bunch of fucking Jews!” From there a scuffle ensued before a security guard broke it up and the police were called.

  What strikes me about this story is that Young could face hate crime charges and yet the situation is the opposite of what Jewish people are usually discriminated against for (tight pockets, dominate world industries not sidewalks and street corners, and whatever else you find posted in comments on Fox News’ website.) Instead we have a down on his luck Jewish man wearing yarmulke and a star of David around his neck who gets a group of mid-westerners willing to fork over some cash and Young sees this as an opportunity to call them “fucking Jews?”

  Come on Delmon, really?

  What if Mr. Young saw an Asian race car driver? Or a white dance choreographer? Or a sober native American?

  One can only wonder. But what I will say is that Mr. Young deserves to be charged with a hate crime. Maybe this way he’ll learn to judge how to use discrimination properly in the future.
