Subject: A Documentary Film, Modest Mouse: The Lonesome Crowded West

Modest Mouse meant a lot of things to me as a teenager. It was a band introduced by my first girlfriend at a pivotal time in my life. I was about to graduate high school. Mentally I was preparing myself to leave behind the small town I was raised in and finally discover the unknown that lied outside of those boundaries. Listening to them again today the memories of those innocent days come flooding back to me.

The documentary (directed by RJ Bentler) follows the band through the early years and the stories about the songs that become The Lonesome Crowded West. Band testimonials about being on tours, driving their van, seeing the whole country and through it coming into an awakened state. They saw the endless strip malls and the popularity of consumer culture, the paving of America, and didn’t want to participate. They spoke to being young and lost in a world on brink of a new millennium. The experiences of true pain, the violence of the mind and the confusion of it all–the growing up.

I instantly related to Isaac Brock’s lyrics, the group’s raw, unique sound and the overall sensibility of those songs being about something more than whose fucking cool or what happened on a Friends episode. Lonesome was an album that ended up shaping the person I was to become today. Songs like “Bankrupt On Selling” and “Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine” had depth and emotional complexity that touched exactly what I was internally struggling with.

I might want to go back to those days.

Missed Connections: Closeted "BROS" and North Carolina's Ban on Gay Marriage

I posted this missed connection on Craigslist for a segment on my podcast, Burning Bridges w/ Ben & Ryan. But with the recent news of North Carolina banning same-sex marriages, I thought I would open the discussion on the culture of closeted “BROS.”

What is fascinating to me is that there are people out there in the conservative parts of America whose opinion of homosexuality (as being a choice, that gays don’t deserve the same rights, that the natural sexual preference and attractions are wrong in the eyes of God) are also the same people that have serious sexual deviancy and lead they’re entire miserable lives pretending to be something they’re not.

Is it jealousy? Maybe.

Are these sad individuals a product of their environment? Surely.

Is it a generational thing? Most definitely.

Now I’m no mental health expert, but if you lead a life where you have sex in the bushes behind a rest stop bathroom and then go home to your wife and kids and beat them; you might have some serious mental problems.

Now we all know if Republican Senator Larry Craig gets caught soliciting gay sex in an airport bathroom, that if he publicly apologizes, his deviant sexual behavior just goes away, right?

Or if John Travolta keeps trying to convince the world he isn’t gay every time gets he gets caught trying to pay another man to let him be himself for a few minutes that his PR reps will remind everyone that Saturday Night Fever star is a married man with kids, he couldn’t be gay. It’s Travolta baby!

And I get that if you’re from say Mississippi and or that you grew up in different times, accepting homosexual feelings was and is not the easiest thing to do. And that’s just my point with North Carolina’s new law, the old fucks will eventually die off and the next generations will be able to step in and finally progress our country to a place where we finally say, “who gives a shit about gay people wanting to get married?”

And don’t give me the sanctity of marriage argument. Marriage is nothing more that a fucking contract at this point.

I can remember in my college years, having some friends who bragged about fucking this girl at the same time. They talked about the experience like it was totally the straightest thing ever, just two dudes sharing a lady. High fiving each other and looking deeply into each other’s eyes while in the act. What they failed to realize is that they were naked and aroused with another man in the room.

The character I created for my missed connection is exactly what I find so funny about “BROS” who won’t accept themselves. An outdoorsman who likes to ride a snowmobile could be eventually be seen as super gay.

The Deats: Delmon Young’s Confused Racial Discrimination

Detroit Tigers outfielder Delmon Young was arrested Friday for attacking a man outside his Midtown Hilton Hotel. Now this all started with a drunk Young witnessing a group of Chicago tourists giving a Jewish homeless man their money. According to police documents, this incited the ball player, who responded with, “You bunch of fucking Jews!” From there a scuffle ensued before a security guard broke it up and the police were called.

What strikes me about this story is that Young could face hate crime charges and yet the situation is the opposite of what Jewish people are usually discriminated against for (tight pockets, dominate world industries not sidewalks and street corners, and whatever else you find posted in comments on Fox News’ website.) Instead we have a down on his luck Jewish man wearing yarmulke and a star of David around his neck who gets a group of mid-westerners willing to fork over some cash and Young sees this as an opportunity to call them “fucking Jews?”

Come on Delmon, really?

What if Mr. Young saw an Asian race car driver? Or a white dance choreographer? Or a sober native American?

One can only wonder. But what I will say is that Mr. Young deserves to be charged with a hate crime. Maybe this way he’ll learn to judge how to use discrimination properly in the future.

A tornado touched down in Northern Texas recently. In the wake of the destruction there were amazingly no reported fatalities. Forney, a small town a few miles outside of Dallas, had seen massive damage leaving most of the residents of Sunnydale Village trailer park out of house and mobile home. At a local disaster shelter set-up in the gymnasium of George Herbert Bush Middle School, Donald Cresspin Jr. a volunteer and local businessman commented, “what happened could be seen as a miracle to some, but theres also seeing some of these folks down here and you just start wonderin’ whats God’s plan really is, you know?”
